testing and component testing are performed in an optimum manner,
employing the most modern facilities and highly skilled personnel, the
value of the results in an actual system is limited as described below.
Feasibility Testing. The purpose of feasibility testing is to estab-
lish the practicality of certain basic concepts of the reactor. Feasibility
testing often takes the form of "quick-and-dirty" mockups, and is intended
to determine as rapidly as possible that the underlying concepts of the
reactor are practical, or can be engineered around. Feasibility testing
must be performed very early in a reactor project to avoid substantial
disruptions in schedules and subsequent cost increase. Emphasis is not
generally placed on exact geometric similtude, operating parameters,
materials of construction, and so on. Important as feasibility testing is
to a project, it should not be considered a substitute for the more thorough
testing required to ensure safety and acceptable operability of the facility.
Component Testing. The purpose of component testing is to develop
and to evaluate performance of specific components, under environmental
conditions which approximate plant operating conditions. Component
testing follows feasibility testing as components are designed and fabricated
or specified and procured. This phase of testing is generally manifested
by several characteristics:
a. Testing in a "limited environment" with a minimum of other
prototypical equipment involved in the test.
b. Testing with only nominal control over environmental conditions
such as coolant quality, flow, temperature, thermal gradients,
and so on.
c. "Stop-and-start" operations, where components are tested for
short periods, removed and modified, and committed for retest.
Components may be under development for many months or
years, yet it is not unusual that when the development is com-
pleted, the final product may have been tested only a few weeks or
months at operating conditions.
