The Admiral 1 [arold W. Gehman. Jr.
I am greatly concerned that the BRAC Commission is considering closing Cannon Air Force
Base.,
Being a resident of Portales, 18 mnie s South of Cannon, for over 4 1 years I am certain that a clo-
sure of Cannon Air Force Base would be devastating to Portales, Clovis and surrounding com-
mrn lies. Cannon is a huge resource in many ways fnr this qrea We are a farnnig commlllmty
with very few resources and local farmers have been facing drought conditions for the past seven
years (this year being the wettest is ages). Cannon has provided our area with additional income
to supplement these low productive times. Without Cannon, I am afraid that all of our efforts to
keep our conrunity going and prospering will he for nothing.
Cannon is a resource for many military retirees who rely on Cannon for health care, grocery
shopping and more and closing Cannon would also have a huge negative effect on our local
schools, including our public schools and Colleges. I have close personal friends and family that
are associated with Cannon and it's efforts.
Many people will loose their jobs and efforts by the US Government and the local community to
supply Cannon with housing, new facilities, land. etc. would be lost. It seems to me that it would
he more beneficial to keep Cannon open than to throw away all of this money and effort that has
been used and spent to make Cannon what it is today.
Please re-evaluate the criteria for closing Cannon, and reconsider your decision, our lively hood
depends on Cannon and your decision will CIcect thousands of people not only in this local com-
munity but also across the state.
Respectfully your,,
roldie Montgomry
