Dear Mr.Bilbray,
My husband came to Cannon Air Force Base as an Air Traffic Controller in 1970.
We were stationed here the entire length of his four year commitment in the USAF.
During that time, I was fortunate to be hired by the Clovis Municipal Schools. A few
years later, my husband was hired to teach science at Clovis High School. We both have
taught here 30+ years.
The focus of this letter will be the importance of keeping Cannon open from an
educator's viewpoint. There are many other very valid reasons for keeping the base
active and those have been addressed by others in the community.
Through the years we often heard military parents praise Clovis schools and say how
glad they were to be stationed here. Many try to stay because of the schools. Others retire
here so their children can continue with their education in Clovis..
As well as strong academics, Clovis has a top-notch music program that begins in
kindergarten. We also have excellent sports programs . Clovis has won many awards in
both the music and the sports areas. One of elementary schools, which is largely a base
population, won a "Redbook School of The Year" award. The reputation of Clovis
Municipal Schools should be considered in the decision about Cannon. It is a great place
for military dependents to be educated.
Clovis Community College also works well with the base. Several classes are
actually offered on the base each session. My husband teaches one of these classes. It is
a good way for those in the military to continue their education since the classes are
especially designed for the military and their dependents. Teachers are careful to take into
consideration such factors as TDY's and special exercises
We always enjoy having children from military families in our classes. Their
presence and the in-put of their parents enrich our programs. Clovis needs Cannon and
Cannon needs Clovis!
