Dear Brig. General Turner,
I am writing to express my concern over the possible closure of Cannon AFB in Clovis, New Mexico.
The merits of keeping the base include almost unlimited air space, the Melrose and White sands bombing
ranges, being able to fly supersonic at a lower ceiling and a very supportive community.
Naturally our community will be impacted financially and the loss of jobs will be significant since this a
rural area. I feel the biggest loss will manifest itself in a different manner. Our community / region has
been in great need of health cave providers and diverse specialties. Our hospital has been aggressively
recruiting physicians and has made progress in bringing them to the region, but my concern is that
providers will cease to be interested due to the loss of the base population. Every person counts and loosing
several thousand may prevent the remainder of the community from being able to have these services. This
part of the country requires travel of one hundred or more miles to receive care in some cases. I don't
know about you, but I don't feel like taking a trip when I'm ill.
Please take a very close look at the benefits (not just the dollars) of keeping Cannon AFB alive. Our
community leaders are trying to improve life for all the peoples of the region; it has taken great efforts and
progress has been realized so please don't stop the progress. Please share this letter with the other members
of the commission.
