Steam-Cooled Reactor Feasibility Study: Steam Water Reactor (SWR), Volume 1 (Sections 1-6)

PDF Version Also Available for Download.

Description

Report presenting the results of an investigation of the technical feasibility and economic attractiveness of a 200 MWₑ power reactor using natural uranium fuel, a heavy water moderator, and a high pressure and temperature stream coolant. A representative of the reactor design is described along with a reference design selected from a number of design variations. A parametric survey of possible steam-cooled D₂0-moderated reactor designs is included. Mechanical design studies are presented of critical components such as fuel element and cladding, pressure tubes, insulation, steam headers, D₂0. Problems relating to refueling and radioactivity of the external system are also considered. … continued below

Problems relating to refueling and radioactivity of the external system are also considered. The major development areas are identified and the approximate cost of the required development program is estimated. An economic study of this reactor is given. An estimate is made of the capital investment required for construction of the plan described herein. An estimate of the fuel cost is also outlined. An estimate of energy cost is presented, based on these estimates and representative values for other operating costs.
