Dear Commissioner Skinner:
I am writing today to voice my concern for Clovis and Cannon Air Force Base. I have lived in
Clovis for 26 of my 33 years and never known Clovis without Cannon. It is my understanding
that many years ago it was closed for a short time but was reopened and has stayed open since
then. Do I take Cannon for granted? Maybe I did but the events of 9/11 changed my feelings
and my dependency on Cannon. I remember how quite the air ways were on that day due to air
traffic being stopped. We have gotten accustomed to the jets flying day in and day out. That
was a very eerie feeling. I hope and pray that situations like that never happen to our country
again. Even now hearing the sound of the jets from the base, I just feel safer for my family and
myself.
I remember back when I was in school, a lot of my friends came from military families. Some of
my friends now are either military dependents or the base brought them here and they have
retired in Clovis because they like it so much. Yes, I have had friends that have left and we do
try to stay in touch. But that is just part of living in a military town.
Clovis is a great town to live in. The weather is great pretty much all the time. Our winters are
never very bad. This would allow training throughout the year. But not only the weather the
schools and teachers are top notch with a variety of activities and backgrounds for the students.
I just ask and pray that you re-evaluate your decision on closing Cannon. You will see that
keeping Cannon open would be best for our community and our country.
Sincerely,
Denise Johnson
