60TH CONGRESS, SENATE. 5 REPORT
18t Session. No. 371.
INCREASING LIMIT OF COST OF PUBLIC BUILDING AT
WICHITA, KANS.
MARCH 12, 1908.-Ordered to be printed.
Mr. WARNER, from the Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds,
submitted the following
REPORT.
[To accompany S. 5894.]
The Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds, to which was
referred the bill (S. 5894) to provide for the completion of the enlarge-
ment of the Government building at Wichita, Kans., and for other
purposes, having considered the same, report back the bill with
an amendment, with the recommendation that the bill do pass.
Strike out all after enacting clause and insert:
That the limit of cost of the United States post-office and public building at
Wichita, Kansas, be increased from the sum of fifty thousand dollars to the sum of
fifty-six thousand dollars, said increase to be used for extension, enlargement, and
remodeling purposes.
A letter from the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury is appended,
as well as one from the Secretary of the Treasury.
TREASURY DEPARTMENT,
OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY.
Referring to the award of the contract for the extension of the post-office and court-
house, Wichita, Kans., which provided that the facing should be of brick in lieu of
stone to match the old portion of the building, I have the honor to state that the appro-
priation made by Congress amounted to $50,000. The work was placed upon the
market and bids were received for carry ngout the work thoroughly in keeping with
the old portion of the building, but the lowest bid received exceeded the amount
available by $20,000. After taking off all the items practicable, the work was again
advertised and the lowest bid received was in amount $49,862. Inasmuch as there
were contingent expenses to be provided for, such as the expense of the Supervising
Architect's office, the superintendent of construction, advertising and distributing
agent's fees, the balance available for the work was approximately $44,000, so that it
was necessary to deduct from the above-mentioned bid of $49,862 the amount included
for facing the building with stone-namely, $5,500-making the total contract price
$44,362.
Respectfully, BEEKMwA WINTHROP,
Assistant Secretary.
