Notes

Abstract: Technological advances in clouding computing has been increasingly reshaping the range of information systems as we know them, therefore affecting the KM and sharing of knowledge in organizations around the globe. Organizations are facing challenges in information and knowledge management that include, but are not limited, to data management: retrieval, processing, storage, and security, to mention a few. Numerous information systems seem to present the most effective format for data protection and sharing, including on premise solutions and on cloud based options: public, private, hybrid. The noticeable and well documented shift from on-premises storage to cloud based result from the incredible volume of data collected and processed daily in organizational operations, causing systems vulnerability and limited storage capacity issues, and creating an exponential demand for cloud computing solutions in KMS. This paper investigates the KMS in organization in an era of cloud computing explosion as a new, revolutionary and promising path for effective data, information and knowledge management systems and practices. It brings a literature review and some case studies of companies and products/solutions on virtualization and clouding computing, concluding that the benefits of cloud computing depends on an effective combination of an information architecture planning, clear business strategy, and successful KM and Sharing approach, which are related to a few factors, including the size of the organization, the type of industry, and most importantly the technological vision and managerial capability to understand the new horizon and effectively position companies in a competitive manner in the global market.
