cademic Homecoming
October 20, 1997
The SLIS Alumni Society Executive Board considers
the first Academic Homecoming, held on October 20,
to be a highly successful endeavor. During the morning
118 alumni, students, and friends toured the School,
enjoyed refreshments and conversation, and attended
mini-workshops presented by members of the faculty.
Workshop presenters and their topics were: Dr. Ana
Cleveland, "Medical Information from Cyberspace;" Dr.
Mark Rorvig, "The Training of Webmasters at SLIS;"
Dr. Barbara Stein, "Children's Books Too Good to
Miss;" and Dean Philip Turner, "Distributed Learning
at SLIS." Dean Turner was assisted by Drs. Catherine
Murphy and Yvonne Chandler, who demonstrated the
Web-based portion of their courses supported by teaching
with technology grants.
At the luncheon which followed, James Stevens,
President of EBSCO Industries, Inc., spoke on "The
Future of Electronic Information Services." Dean Philip
Turner recognized several persons in attendance,
including Dr. David Webb, director of the Department
of Library Service (later the School of Library &
Information Sciences) from 1953 until 1967. The Dean
also presented newly designed SLIS pins to persons who
have made substantial donations to the School. One
highlight of the luncheon was the unveiling of
photographs of four honorees which will hang on the
School's Wall of Honor (see separate article).
The Alumni Society, which plans to make Academic
Homecoming an annual affair, has scheduled next year's
event on Saturday, November 14.Dean Turner welcomes guests
