Features the Universvit FirstList
In February, the School of Library and Information Sciences became the proud owner of UNT's first Internet List.
SLIS-L now has over 180 members, with more joining every day. In setting up the List, Dean Phil Turner, who serves
as the official owner stated, "The purpose of this List is to facilitate communication among students, faculty, staff,
alumni, and friends. Through this List, we can move one step closer to a virtual environment. The fact that every
SLIS faculty and staff member has joined the List is evidence of their commitment to using this technology to bring us
together, no matter where we are."
While most List members are satisfied with lurking, the Library and Information Sciences Students Association, as
well as other student groups, have used it to get the word out about various functions. There have also been several
lively discussions about School policies and procedures, including the best time for the computer lab to be open. As
soon as students are admitted into the School's programs, they are urged to join the List to assist them in becoming a
part of the SLIS family.
To join SLIS-L, send an e-mail message to LISTSERV@UNT.EDU and put in the body of the message: SUB-

--Dr. Phil Turner--
The Alumni Society of the School of Library and Information Sciences was officially reorganized on April 9 at a business
session held during the Texas Library Association Annual Conference in Fort Worth. Revised versions of the 1982 Constitution
and Bylaws, submitted by a committee of alumni and endorsed by the SLIS faculty, were approved with minor changes. Copies
of both documents will be available on the SLIS webpage.
Officers elected for 1997 are: Linda Allmand, Director of the Fort Worth Public Library, President; Debby Jennings,
Librarian, Fort Worth Country Day School, President-elect; Jackie Riemenschneider, Librarian, Bedford ISD, Secretary-
Treasurer; Cathy Hartman and Melody Kelly, Documents Librarians, University of North Texas Libraries, Members-at-
Large. These five officers serve as the Executive Board of the Society. In the future, the Past-President will serve on the Board
instead of a second Member-at-Large.
The purpose of the Society is to advance the interests of the School and promote a closer association between the School and
its alumni. Among the responsibilities of the Society are assisting the School in planning the annual SLIS dinner held each spring
during the TLA conference and the homecoming activities held
on campus in the fall, and presenting an annual Distinguished
Alumnus Award. The Society plans to award annual
scholarships from interest accrued by the Lady Kate Medders
Fund, the account in which money from all life memberships and
a portion of annual memberships is permanently held. This fund
currently contains some $27,000.
Membership in the society is about 250. Fifty-three life _ X
memberships are carryovers from the earlier period. New
memberships include 105 life and 49 annual members. Persons
holding any degree or certificate from SLIS (or friends of SLIS)
who have not done so, are urged to join the Society. A
membership form is located in the back of the newsletter.
