to the masses. Classrooms are crowded so that understanding
each individual child has "been difficult for even good teach-
er e. Many schools have "been staffed with poorly trained
teachers who have worked with inadequate facilities. The
apparent unhappiness of thousands of our children, their lack
of purpose♦ their fears# their record. of juvenile delinquency*
and the admissions to our mental institutions point to failure
of the school to fulfill its responsibility*

Personality maladjustment develops as a result of inter-
action between the papil and various forces in his environ-
ment* No individual is inescapably doomed to maladjustment;
"but some characteristics come into conflict with physical and
social demand© to a greater degree than others# fh«® certain
types of individuals develop maladjustments with a rela-
tively high frequency. Maiad justwent say "fee due to a number
of cause®, the following being outstanding:
1* Physical handicaps
2* Dissension in the home
3. Lack of understanding, kindness, and sincerity in
parent# aid teachers* dealings with the child
4* Lack of recreational facilities
§* Insufficient living space
