Studies on the synthesis, the isolation from complex mixtures and the purification of organic compounds, particularly those with biological activity have stimulated the development of countercurrent batch extraction techniques. This process has been used as an analytical tool to study complex mixtures. Certain similarities exist between the conditions of application of the method to biochemical problems and the conditions of the solvent extraction purification of uranium. Therefore the countercurrent batch extraction principle has been applied to the "25" recovery process and to other problems in the separation of radio active isotopes.
