From Introduction: "This bulletin describes in some detail the more important work done by the Bureau of Mines during 1916 in efforts to increase safety and efficiency in the mineral industries. This bulletin gives descriptions of some noteworthy safety devices and discusses in fuller detail than the annual reports the relation of the bureau's work to the general problems of safety and efficiency in the mineral industries and the significance of the results that the bureau has been able to achieve."
