Preliminary results from a measurement of the inclusive process p + /sup 4/He ..-->.. x + /sup 4/He in the region .04 less than or equal to /t/ less than or equal to.5 (GeV/c)/sup 2/ and Mx/sup 2/ less than or equal to 12.GeV/sup 2/ for five incident proton momenta from 46 to 400 GeV/c. In this region the differential cross section d/sup 2/epsilon/dtMx/sup 2/ shows a t dependence of the type e /sup b/ 1 /sup t/ + de /sup b/ 2 /sup t/ and a dominant 1/Mx/sup 2/ behavior for Mx/sup 2/ > 5 GeV/sup 2/. In this region the differential cross section d/sup 2/epsilon/dtMx/sup 2/ shows a t dependence of the type e /sup b/ 1 /sup t/ + de /sup b/ 2 /sup t/ and a dominant 1/Mx/sup 2/ behavior for Mx/sup 2/ > 5 GeV/sup 2/. The measurement was performed at Fermilab by detecting slow recoil ..cap alpha.. -particles from helium gas jet target placed at the internal beam of the accelerator. 3 references.
