' Dear alumni and friends:
At UNT, we are working to help Texas stay strong
and grow even stronger in the 21st century. Two
groups in Austin are focusing on this same objective.
S I. They are the Commission on Colleges and Universi-
ties for the 21st Century, created by Lt. Gov. Rick
Perry, and a Texas Higher Education Coordinating
Board committee that comprises all its membership,
plus top business and civic leaders.
The groups are much alike in their awareness of
the central role that education at all levels must play
in ensuring our state's future. Much of that future
success is riding on the skill of teachers - at the
elementary, middle school and high school levels - to foster the development of
young people.
It may be ironic that the UNT of today, with its exceptionally wide range of
academic disciplines and degree programs, is finding that its original mission in
1890, that of a teacher training institute, has risen to extraordinary prominence in
the eyes of today's leaders.
Fortunately, our College of Education keeps us at the forefront in responding to
that renewed interest. Even though we have become far bigger and more complex
since 1890, we have never neglected our original mission that links us, through the
teachers prepared here, to many of our future students.
I hope you enjoy reading this issue of The North Texan. I encourage you to come
back to campus for Alumni Appreciation Day, Honors Day and University Day on
April 28 as we celebrate the excellence of our alumni, students, faculty and staff, as
well as the points in history when our own Board of Regents was established
(1949) and our institution became a university (1961).
Sincerely,Alfred F. Hurley
Chancellor and President4 The North Texan
