NOTE
Inspiring the generations
Dear alumni and friends:
This fall, Sen. John Glenn's historic Space Shuttle
flight at age 77 inspired us to reconsider our ideas
.,, about the limitations of age and reminded us that
learning about aging benefits everyone.
Our cover story (see page 20) illustrates UNT's
leadership in opening doors for older students and
in offering educational programs that help society
serve a fast-growing aging population. Recently,
UNT was selected by the Texas Higher Education
Coordinating Board to study the ways Texas higher
education institutions serve the state's aging popu-
lation. The key results, reported in the article,
show a marked need for improvement statewide.
Fortunately, UNT alumni, faculty and students have long been engaged in this
field, and our track record puts us in a position to lead the way. In addition, it's
important to note that collaborative research at the UNT Health Science Center
at Fort Worth offers new medical hope, addressing problems related to aging such
as heart disease and Alzheimer's disease.
Articles in this issue also include the other end of the age spectrum - children.
A feature on UNT's play therapy training program (see page 26), which just cele-
brated its silver anniversary, offers an enlightening look at the largest program of
its kind in the world. By training professionals to help children work through
emotional issues, this program holds bright promise for youngsters.
And at the new Environmental Education, Science and Technology Building
(see page 9), senior citizens are volunteering to work alongside UNT students and
faculty to help schoolchildren understand environmental issues. These efforts truly
span the generations.
Likewise, the exciting new Lucille "Lupe" Murchison Performing Arts Center
(see page 12), recently named for Regent Murchison (see page 31), will soon bring
all generations together to experience music, dance and theater in one of the finest
settings possible. Please make plans to join us during the center's opening series of
concerts, beginning Feb. 20.
Sincerely,
Alfred F. Hurley
