ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The journey to completion of this work started years ago when I walked into the
Department of Applied Gerontology to discuss an academic path to support my interests. I am
so grateful to Dr. Keith Turner, who looked at me and said, "You don't need another master's
degree-you're a candidate for a PhD." Just like that box of matches sitting in my kitchen
drawer, it only took one spark to ignite the pursuit and self-confidence.
I thank my committee chair and advisor, Dr. Stan Ingman, for his unwavering support of
and commitment to my efforts, even when faced with the challenge of driving a square peg into a
round hole.
To my Dad-I miss you every day and wish you could have been on this journey with me
to completion. Your support of education throughout my life, and how you instilled the
importance of learning and exploring, built the foundation that drove me forward. I hope I made
you proud. You were a living laboratory at times as we struggled with your own aging
experience. Little did I know that all I was learning would then help me care for Mom in your
absence. My love for rural came from you.
To Dr. Patti Parker-Your guidance, perspective, and patience helped to fill my
sometimes limp sails with gusts of direction and clarity to help me navigate choppy waters and
bring this ship into port! Your support was invaluable and cherished, and I learned so much
from you that will no doubt contribute to my future success.
Thanks to Dr. James Swan for his unparalleled "joy of data" and the ability to interpret
and analyze complexity in the attempt to simplify for those of us who are not data savants.
Thanks to my friends who were subjected to the vagaries of my mood and social
interaction, wondering why I was so doggedly determined to do this. I think you know by now.iii
