MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Greetings! 2008 was another successful year for CINF under the skillful
leadership of David Martinsen. It was the second year for moving ahead with the
CINF strategic plan envisioned and formalized by Erja Kajosalo. Over the past two
years the Division has been experimenting and innovating in four selected areas
covering division branding, multidisciplinary programming, virtual interactions
and professional development of individual members.
Let me reflect on the past accomplishments and then mention some of our
future plans. In the beginning of 2008 CINF adopted a new mission statement and
later redesigned its membership brochure. The new brochure includes the cover
graphic visualizing the ways in which our Division fosters the sharing of
expertise in science informatics, information technology, and librarianship.
In order to preserve its historical materials CINF signed an agreement with the Chemical Heritage Foundation
(CHF). The Division is grateful to the late Val Metanomski for compiling the divisional archives over many years
and for transferring them to CHF in the Fall of 2008.
In response to the themes selected by the ACS Multidisciplinary Program Planning Group (MPPG), CINF
organized sessions at both 2008 national meetings and will continue having a representative on MPPG in 2009
and beyond. The students' posters for the CINF Scholarship for Scientific Excellence were presented at
the CINF Welcoming Reception in Philadelphia, and we plan to continue this arrangement for the next
year. In addition to scholarship support for students, the Division piloted a summer intern program, which
resulted in one successful pairing of student/employee. We shall discuss the overseeing of a summer intern
program by the CINF Careers Committee at the next ACS National Meeting in Salt Lake City.
Speaking of committees, I would like to thank all outgoing committee chairs for their outstanding service to the
Division and for their mentorship of the incoming division leaders. I wish to extend my congratulations and
greetings to the new officers and committee chairs, namely Carmen Nitsche (Chair Elect), Meghan Lafferty
(Treasurer), Charles Huber (Alternate Councilor), Rajarshi Guha (Program), Janette Carver (Membership), Jody
Kempf (Audit), Philip McHale (Awards), Patricia Meindl (Careers), Jeremy Garritano (Education), Gregory
Banik (Fundraising), and Bill Town (Publications). Next year we will have plenty of opportunities for members'
involvement in the divisional activities plus convenient venues for virtual participation and travel aid for division
functionaries, younger members in particular. Among some of our initiatives will be the Best Presentation Award,
Careers Vignettes (videotaping of interviews with chemical information professionals), electronic voting for
CINF elections, and converting the Chemical Information Bulletin from print to electronic format. Please
volunteer for CINF! As I look forward to my term as chair with both enthusiasm and a sense of obligation for
sustaining progress of the Division, I welcome your suggestions on how CINF can serve you better.
