GRETCHEN M. BATAILLE IS THE -14TH
PRESIDENT IN ITHE 118-YEAR HISTORY
OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH IEXAS.
SHE JOINED UNT IN AUGUSr 200oo6.
t the University of North Texas, a student-centered public research university, more
than 34,000 students discover the power of ideas each day. Ideas are the foundation of knowledge
and the catalyst for change and advancement. And UNT's faculty and student scholars seek to understand,
to advance human knowledge and to tackle society's challenges by exploring and nurturing ideas.
This exploration is the foundation for a bold research agenda that will expand our strengths in science
and technology while continuing to build our nationally and internationally recognized programs
in music, art and the humanities. It also will support our tradition of developing teachers and reaching
out to make a difference in our communities through applied research.
Dr. Vishwanath "Vish" Prasad, who became UNT's vice president for research and economic devel-
opment in fall 2007, will lead this expansion of our research, original scholarship and creative activity.
He also will guide the development of Discovery Park, UNT's 285-acre research park.
And while I am certain his experience in securing funding for research programs and developing
partnerships with industry will serve UNT well, he also is charged with maintaining UNT's existing
centers of excellence. For example, our Texas Center for Music and Medicine (page 18) is dedicated to
studying, treating and preventing musicians' health problems, and at UNT's Polymer Mechanical and
Rheology Laboratory, researchers are working on the next generation of bioplastics (page 24).
You can learn more about Dr. Prasad and UNT's new provost, Dr. Wendy K. Wilkins, on the
next page. And by reading this magazine, you'll get a sample of the many and varied ways that
UNT scholars are making a difference.
With green pride,
GRETCHEN M. BATAILLE
