TAKING A NEW LOOK AT AN OLD STANDARD
about our artists
Stephan Friel is currently a doctoral student in the studio of Eric Nestler. Stephan has won
the University of Central Oklahoma Concerto Competition on both saxophone and oboe.
Mr. Friel has played lead alto for Natalie Cole and was a soloist with the University of North
Texas Wind Symphony.
In 2000, Xiao-Bo Nestler made her Carnegie Hall debut after winning a prize in the Frinna
Awerbuch Competition in New York. She also has performed as a soloist with various
orchestras including the Fort Worth Orchestra. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reviewed
that her performance of the Beethoven Third Piano Concerto "presented both thunder and
impetuosity." Xiao-Bo was born into a musical family in Shanghai and graduated from
the prestigious High School of Shanghai Conservatory of Music with top honors. Piano
competitions won by Mrs. Nestler include the Maria Canals International Piano Competition
in Spain and Martin Memorial Piano Competition at TCU, among others. She holds a bachelor
of music degree in piano performance from the University of North Texas College of Music,
and the performer's certificate and artist diploma from Texas Christian University School of
Music. Mrs. Nestler has studied with Xiao Min and Lin Er-Yao from Shanghai Conservatory
of Music, John Owings from TCU and Pamela Mia Paul from UNT.
Seven hundred ninth program of the 2011-2012 season.
