There are two major song cycles for male voice composed by Franz Schubert: Die sch6ne
Miillerin (which Harold Heiberg and I performed with fortepiano in September 2008) and
Winterreise. Schumann composed Dichterliebe and Beethoven composed the very first
"official" song cycle, An die ferne Geliebte. Prior to turning 70 in July, I was planning to
present Winterreise for my final recital, having already performed the others, and title the
concert "A Senior Recital, Opus 70," which refers to me and not the music, which is Opus
89, and just happens to refer to my most honorable colleague, Harold Heiberg, who felt
he wouldn't be able to perform this work at this time. I had to find a pianist who could fit
into this picture.
Special thanks to Elvia Puccinelli who came up with a "special problems" request for
a graduate pianist, Mi-Jin Kim. Mi-Jin needed a semester (Spring 2011) of advanced
German diction because she was working on collaborative piano with Dr. Puccinelli. I
accepted, and assigned Mi-Jin all of the above works plus Schumann's Frauenliebe und
Leben for female voice, to learn in depth, in order to teach these cycles to any pianist
desiring a degree in collaborative piano. That meant correct pronunciation of texts, correct
translation of texts and the ability to play and sing simultaneously each song in these
cycles flawlessly. Mi-Jin Kim was almost flawless and I engaged her to be the pianist in
this Winterreise, Opus 89 which I dedicate to my dear friend and colleague, Mr. Harold
Heiberg. Thank you, Harold!--David Sundquist
