Description

Laboratory studies have shown that a weld overlay technique is a potential method for repair of austenitic stainless steel containing helium from irradiation or from implantation by tritium. An interest in helium embrittlement cracking during welding developed as a result of an extensive program to determine the cause of leaks in repair welds in a nuclear reactor tank. Recent studies have demonstrated the suitability of the overlay technique for welding over stress corrosion cracks in nuclear reactor vessels.
