the observed decrease in metabolism of hydrocortisone
in the present study may be explained in the following three
ways« fhe first and most probable explanation is that lrrad-
iation bringa about anatomical and physiological damage to
the liver* Secondly, due to an increase to circulating cortico-
steroids brought about by irradiation, the tniyaes of the
liver (normal or irradiated) involved with corticosteroid
®t b®ll«i may boo ©me saturated* A third possibility Bight
be that adding the steroid to already saturated erutymes la
damaged liver ©ells would result in a decrease in the meta-
bolism of tip steroid.
Wwm tha results of the present investigation, one night
mete the following significant conclusion In regard to the
Stress Syndrome in general* It has been shown that X-irrsdiatlem
brings about sn increase in the amount of circulating cortico-
steroids $m the body * ffhe results indicate that these steroids
may persist in the body unchanged for a longer period of time
because of the inability of a damaged liver to metabolize•them*
the. resultant sustained level of corticosteroid concentration
