INTRODUCTION ■
Benito Pe'rez Galdos was born in a small town, Las Palmas,
in the Canary Islands in 18^3* His father was a colonel in
the local militia* His mother was a daughter of an officer
of the Inquisition, and she was of Basque descent. Galdos
learned his first lessons in an English school ana began 1
studies on th© secondary level at the age of thirteen a^T;pMi

ambitions, and he wrote articles for two newspapers the

capital city of the Canary Islands. In 1863, his parents sent

he gave an unflattering description of the law and of people
who live by it. Like almost all other young writers, he
took refuge in literary studies and in literary composition*.
Instead of going to class, he would spend many days in the
city frequenting cafes where his university friends .gathered;
This timid and silent young man enjoyed the glamour and the
pleasures of Madrid* its crowds, its theatres and its talk
of revolutions past and present.
