CHAPTER VI
DISCUSSION
The finding of this study Indicate that there was no
abnormal function of the thyroid gland in patients with
chronic ulcerative colitis. Although there was some ten-
dency for the results to show a slight mean elevation of thy-
roid activity, it does not appear to be of any great impor-
tance. The advantages and disadvantages of each of the tech-
niques employed in the study will now be considered separately,
Serum Cholesterol
The serum cholesterol figures in the present study for
both the control and experimental series compare favorably
with normal values given in the literature* Zieve, Skanae,
and Schultz (17), for example* found the total serum cho-
lesterol values to euthyroid subjects to range from 98 to
590 milligrams per 100 ml. of serum with a man value of
208 a®, per 100 ml. of serum, fhla is to be compared with
mean values in the present work of 200 and 205 ag. per 100
ml, of serum. It is not felt that too much weight should be
given the serum cholesterol levels as a measure of thyroid
activity. However, this test is hi^ily unspeclfle and thus
a rather poor diagnostic aid in evaluating the status of the
thyroid. It is true that the serum cholesterol level is
