STUDY ON REDUCTION OF ACCESSORY-
This is the third quarterly technical progress report submitted
in accordance with requirements outlined in Attachment B, Reports and
Reviews, Environmental Protection Agency Contract 68-03-2119. This
report covers the period from January 18, 1975 through March 31, 1975.
The objective of this study program is to minimize automotive
accessory horsepower consumption, and thereby maximize overall vehicle
fuel economy, by utilizing continuously variable speed drives or
auxiliary power units CAPUs) in a standard passenger automobile.
As an aid to definitizing accessory performance, load require-
ments and fuel economy, a baseline vehicle has been established. This
vehicle is a conventional intermediate size 5- or 6-passenger automobile
with a 4.1 to 5.7 liter (250-350 cubic inch) displacement, spark igni-
tion engine. Accessories to be considered are the alternator, power
steering system, power brakes, air conditioner, cooling fan, water
pump and emission control air pump.
Although the primary goal of the study is to minimize power con-
sumption of the accessory system, this must be accomplished in a manner
acceptable to both manufacturers and customers.
Factors such as first cost, complexity, maintainability, .and
durability, will be significant considerations in the. selection process.
Here’s what’s next.
