Air Conditioning - Reduced pumping losses by improving valves
and porting (10 percent). Additional gains, not considered in this
analysis, could be made by using a temperature cycling compressor.
Alternator - Reduced losses by lowering windage, bearing and
brush effect and improving electrical losses (27 percent low speed,
40 percent high speed).
Fan - Fan geometry changed to air-foil shape and shroud fixed to
fan center-line with 0.2 inch tip clearance (38 percent).
Power Steering - Remove or reduce effect of flow control orifice
(14 percent low speed, 20 percent high speed).
Water Pump - Improved geometry and efficiency to achieve needed
flow increase at low constant speed without increasing required input
power (0 percent).
Air Pump - Improve mechanical efficiency with lighter bearings
and rotating mass (0 percent low speed, 10 percent high speed).
Results of this preliminary study indicate that overall accessory
power consumption may be reduced by 15 to 20 percent with reasonable
efficiency improvements. Detailed analysis and testing is expected to
confirm a minimum attainable improvement of 15 percent; therefore,
this value will be used for fuel economy predictions.
