As is shown in the first slide, the structure of the organo-
phosphorus extractants are methylenediphosphonates, carbamyl-
phosphonates, and carbamylmethylenephosphonates combined with
hexyl, ethyl, and butyl groups such as in the case with DHDECMP
(dihexyl-N,N-diethylcarbamylmethylene phosphonate) or DBDECMP
(N,N-dibutyldiethylcarbamyl phosphonate).
SLIDE 1
Since the cost of the organophosphorus compounds is relatively
high, a study was made to determine the aqueous solubility
of.five of the extractants. The solubility of DHDECMP,. DBDECMP,
DBDBCMP, DBDECP, and the Purex process extractant, TBP, were
determined in water and in nitric acid solutions ranging from
1 to 10 M. The solubility of the compounds were determined
by adding 5 ml of each organic to 5 ml of each of the aqueous
solutions and shaking the mixtures for ten minutes on a Vortex(R)
shaker. The solutions were allowed to stand for a few minutes
for phase separation and then the aqueous phase was sampled
and analyzed for phosphate concentration. The method used for
analysis was a colorimetric method utilizing the antimony-
phosphomolybdate blue complex.
