I am sure I will have seen you in person before this letter arrives
in Michigan, but I did want to reinforce our phone discussion of
January 20th regarding Brent's evaluation. We appreciated
receiving the evaluation at the earlier date because it has given
us a chance to put into action many of the recommendations.
It is clear from the response we faxed to you and the hard copy
enclosed that we have been able to adjust many of our activities
based on the recommendations and observations. The most
significant change to our plans has been the development of the
Leadership Seminar which allows us to "train trainers". As you can
see, we refer often to the Seminar in the report because it is the
method we are using to attempt corrections documented in the
report. Indeed, the content of the Seminar is lifted from Brent's
I would like to point out several comments contained in the report
which cause concern. The observations on criticism (Nancy Berry at
the Meadows) and the general comments on goals were discussed with
Brent in Santa Barbara. At that time it appeared the evaluations
are being used to "send messages" to the Getty. As an example, the
goals found in our Institute notebook were lifted from the Dobbs
Handbook. Our conversation with Brent revealed his reservations
about the content of the handbook. The Institutes are in a bind if
the funding source of our project sends out literature not in
agreement with the bias of the evaluator from the same agency.
He also has strong feelings about the "formula" so often used in
criticism and employed by Nancy Berry in last summer's Institute.
In many ways Nancy has more experience than Dr. Wilson in terms of
the critical process in school and museum environments. He fails
to see that teachers are at all levels of understanding, requiring
some simplistic techniques in the early stages of DBAE.
