Armed with a supply of bologna, bread and cartons of
milk, about 30 women stage a protest demonstration at
the State Welfare Office in Dallas. The demonstrators,
all welfare recipients, are protesting recent cuts in
state welfare payments. They say the payments should be
increased, not reduced. And they say they're not leav-
ing until something is done. The demonstrators entered
the office early this afternoon. At 6 this evening, one
hour past the normal closing time, the agency's regional
director, James Rowell, says the office is closing for
the night and requests that the demonstrators go home.
Mrs. Ruth Jefferson, spokesman for the protest group,
says "We're staying until we all get money." A few
minutes later, city councilman-elect George Allen meets
with the demonstrators and suggests they appoint a
committee to meet with the proper authorities tomorrow
morning. He says going to jail is not always the best
way to accomplish something. But the demonstrators
refuse to bere.
