Notes

Abstract: Objective: The objective of this work in progress is to examine the knowledge management practices of the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) Schizophrenia Study Team, a group of interdisciplinary informatics researchers comprised of faculty, staff, and students from eight academic units at Texas Woman’s University (referred to as “the Team”).
Method: A case study approach, using observations and documentary evidence, is employed to understand the Team’s knowledge management practices as it analyzes a dataset about the healthcare utilization of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia from over 90 healthcare providers in North Texas (Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council Education & Research Foundation, 2017).
Findings: Despite advances made in computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), significant challenges to effective interdisciplinary informatics collaboration remain. Lee, McDonald, Anderson, and Tarczy-Hornoch’s (2009) collaboratory concepts will be applied to the Team’s functioning, and their suggestions for sustaining interdisciplinary informatics efforts to address large-scale, complex biomedical questions will be adopted as the Team continues its work.
