Abstract: Research Data Management (RDM) is about “the organisation of data, from its entry to the research cycle through to the dissemination and archiving of valuable results” (Whyte & Tedds, 2011, p. 1). Beyond the acquisition of their own specific, inquiry-related data, researchers have a special role to play in RDM, which requires a clear understanding of, and an applied skill set related to, their role in the research data lifecycle. The purpose of this paper is to examine the level of awareness and understanding of the various issues, challenges, and training needs associated with RDM for Hacettepe University (Turkey) researchers. Preliminary findings indicate very low levels of data literacy, RDM awareness, knowledge, and skills among participants. The majority of researchers are uncertain about RDM related issues. Findings also indicate that, while participants have no formal training in RDM related subjects, they are willing to take part in training, if it is provided. A majority of participants agree that universities should be the responsible body for RDM.
