PROJECTIONS OF WASTE SHIPMENTS AND ACCUMULATIONS
Based on an analysis of probable reprocessing flowsheets and waste
solidification processes, the final volumes of solidified high-level
wastes from reprocessing PWR, HTGR, and LMFBR fuels should be about
2 ft3, 6 ft3, and 3 ft3 per ton of fuel, respectively. Using these
estimates of solidified waste volumes, and assuming that all wastes
will be stored at the reprocessing plants for 10 years before shipment
to a federal repository, Tables 7 through 11 were constructed to depict
future annual waste shipments. Table 7 presents the volume of waste
shipped, while Tables 8 and 9 present the isotopic power and radio-
activity 'in the wastes that are shipped. The number of waste packages
that are shipped annually (Table 10) assumes that the waste is sealed
in cylindrical canisters having nominal dimensions of 12 in. in diameter
by 10 ft long, and containing 6.28 ft3 of waste, each. The number of
annual shipments (Table 11) is based on the assumption that each shipment
consists of 12 waste packages.
Properties of the wastes as accumulated at a repository through the
*year 2010 are given in. Table 12.
