Description

The HPD fuel assemblies continued to accumulate exposure during the quarter. The average burnup for the various groups was 1770 to 2810 Mwd/t. Hot swaging of 10-mil stainless clad fuel rods to 95% theoretical density was demonstrated. Results of erosion tests on purposely defected swaged UO/sub 2/ rods of 90% T.D. indicate that these cladded types are highly resistant to UO/sub 2/ removal by coolant streams. Developmental work on fuel handling equipment and fuel assemblies for the Big Rock development is reported. Description

The HPD fuel assemblies continued to accumulate exposure during the quarter. The average burnup for the various groups was 1770 to 2810 Mwd/t. Results of erosion tests on purposely defected swaged UO/sub 2/ rods of 90% T.D. indicate that these cladded types are highly resistant to UO/sub 2/ removal by coolant streams. Developmental work on fuel handling equipment and fuel assemblies for the Big Rock development is reported. Operation of a 9-rod heat transfer test section at mass velocities of 0.56 x 10/sup 6/ and 1.12 x 10/ sup 6/ lb/hr-ft/sup 2/ for various qualities at 1000 psi is reported. Investigations in physics were aimed at developing economical methods of determining power distribution, the possibility of using axially distributed poison as a step toward improving axial power distribution, and development of a 300 Mw HPD conceptual design. Other activities are reported in coordination and test planning. (J.R.D.)
