The analytical data obtained 'for the Vipor samples
from this loop which uses biphenyl as the working fluid are
included in Table 2.1.10 for up to 2500 hours. This is
actually only a maximum of abbut,.1500 hours on a single batch
of fluid as new biphenyl was charged to the loop at about 1000
hours. The only expected degrp4ation products found have been
hydrogen and methane. All samples' have contained a major
quantity of nitrogen indicating that air has leaked into the
system at some time. However, ,it has been"quite constant since
the loop was restarted at 1000 hours. The presence of large
amounts of carbon monoxide an4 carbon dioxide in the samples
is conSistant with this observation.
Tho overall recovery of products in the vapor samples
from loop 1#3 has not been too good. It is believed that the:
probable cause of -thip is the presence of low boiling oxidation
products which are not detected by the presently used molecular-
sieve and silica gel columns.
This is the only loop where we have found any
detectable quantities of degradation products other than
gaseous materials. The &le at 933 hours was found to contain
a measurable amount of benzene - 70 ppm by weight in the
chloroform solution of low boilers. For this simple, this
corresponds to about 0.013% in the fluid. Data for this sample
are given in Table 2.1.11. This sample was prior to the fluid
change at 1026 hours.
