188.8.131.52 Chemical Analysis
Vapor Sample - The gas is analyzed by gas
chromatography using a molecular sieve column for carbon
monoxide, hydrogen, methane, and nitrogen and a silica gel
column for the detection of carbon dioxide, ethene, and
Liquid Sample The sample is distilled to give
two fractions - low boilers and a residue which contains the
unchanged working fluid and any higher boiling products which
may have formed in the loop.
The low boilers are dissolved in chloroform and
analyzed by gas chromatography. A column of polyethylene
glycol-1500 on teflon has been used to detect quantities of
benzene down. to 8 parts per million by volume in the chloroform
The working fluid - high boiler residue is normally
dissolved in chloroform and analyzed by gas chromatography on
an Apiezon L column. This procedure will detect about 50 parts
per million of the terphenyl isomer in the sample.
The working fluid high boiler mixture has been
distilled further for several samples in an attempt to concentrate
the high boilers. This has not yielded any detectable amounts of
these products, however. A possible problem may be that the
polynuclear aromatics are all somewhat volatile and the small
quantities present in these samples sublime with the unchanged
