This report describes the methods and codes that
were used to calculate a chronological history of brurnup and
fluence for EBR-II. It serves as a users" guide to the method
and the interrelationships of the program modules. Isotopic
depletions and buildups are obtained using a system of com-
puter programs based on the DOT transport code and the REBUS
fuel-cycle modules of the ARC (Argonne Reactor Computation)
system. A cumulative file of volume fractions and fluences is
maintained. These data, along with volume fractions fr newly
added subassemblies, are input for calculations of the reactor
run next in chronological order. Thus, any driver-fuel or
experimental subassembly may be followed throughout its
history in the reactor.
For EBR-II* to fulfill its role as a fast-reactor test-irradiation and
examination facility, the chronological history of its core environment
must be reliably and accurately characterized. Such a history is required
because core loadings have been continually altered as a result of driver-
subassembly burnup, removal of experimental fueled or nonfueled irradiation
subassemblies that had reached their goal exposure, installation of new
experimental subassemblies, and removal of subassemblies suspected of contain-
ing fuel-cladding breaches.
*EBR-II (Experimental Breeder Reactor II) is the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission's
primary facility for performance of irradiation tests of fuels and materials in
the LHFBR (Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor) Program. -
