(I) Rigorous Results
Under this heading are listed some results of continuing work
which follow from the most generally accepted principles of physical
theory only (unitarity, positivity, crossing, etc.), occasionally com-
bined with additional assumptions of a general nature:
a) For reactions a+b-a+b and a+b->i+b ,some general results about the
sign of the real part of the forward scattering amplitude were obtained.
The additional input in this case was some gross experimental features
of total cross-sections. The results give numerical bounds on the energy
beyond which the real part must remain positive for various .reactions.41
b) A careful evaluation of the real parts of the 7rTp, K p, and pp,
forward amplitudes was carried out via the dispersion relations for
energies from 1 Gev to 200 Gev. A potentially significant discrepancy
between the calculated real parts and those obtained from the -np charge
exchange data of the Caltech group was noted.62
