Experimental determination of the critical point and high-temperature saturated phase densities of rubidium

PDF Version Also Available for Download.

Description

A cylindrical capsule partially filled with rubidium metal was hung from transverse knife edges in the plane normal to the axis of the capsule at its center. The equilibrium rest angle of the capsule was measured at various temperatures until it reached the horizontal position, at which the rubidium inside the capsule was in one phase. The rest angle at a given temperature is a function of the saturated vapor and liquid densities, and is solved simultaneously with the rest angle of another capsule containing a different mass of rubidium metal, at, or interpolated to, the same temperature. The saturated ... continued below

The saturated phase densities are obtained, by extrapolation, up to the critical point. The critical temperature obtained was 333l plus or minus 10 deg F and the critical density 0.347 g/cm/sup 3/ plus or minus 0.5%;. Combined with the critical pressure of 1944 psia obtained previously, the critical compressibility factor was calculated as 0.189 plus or minus 0.001. (auth)
