All School Days and Other Activities
Dr. Ana Cleveland and Jodi Philbrick
(LIS MS '01) hosted a Houston All School Day
on April 2, 2011 with the theme, "Navigating
Political Waters: A Primer for Information
Professionals:' Many Houston area professionals
shared their expertise on the topic with the
students and graduates in attendance. They also
held a new Houston area student orientation and
hosted the Back to School Bash in conjunction
with Dr. Larry Enoch's SLIS 5200 Web Institute.
A record number of students and graduates
attended the Bash to celebrate the new academic
year. A joyful event!
The fall 2011 Houston All School, titled
"Repurposing the Library for the Digital Age,"'
was held on November 5 at the University of
Houston MD Anderson Library, Elizabeth D.
Rockwell Pavilion. The program included keynote
speaker Wendy Heger, Assistant Director of
Planning & Facilities, Houston Public Library;
Pat Thibodeau, Associate Dean for Library
Services, Duke University Medical Center; and
Dr. Dennis Adams, Associate Professor, Decision
and Information Sciences, Bauer College of
Business, University of Houston. A panel
consisting of Liz Philippi, Manager, Department
of Library Services, Houston ISD; Meller
Langford, Deputy Director of Public Services,
Houston Public Library; and Alice Phillips,
Senior Research Librarian, Upstream Technical

The fall All School Day on the Denton
campus was held in conjunction with the opening
activities for the Places & Spaces: Mapping
Science exhibit held at Discovery Park October
1, 2011, the evening after the opening ceremonies
(see pgs. 12-13). Dr. Katy Borner, the exhibit's
curator from Indiana University, served as a
speaker and conducted a guided tour of the
exhibit. Other speeches at the All School Day
were presented by Hannah Tarver of the UNT
Libraries Digital Projects Unit, Dr.Jesse Hamner
of the Research & Visualization Environment,
Dr. Chetan Tiwari of Geography, Dr. Armin
Mikler of Computer Science, Dr. Ray Stephens,
retired from the UNT History Department, and
Dr. Yunfei Du (LIS faculty) and Barbara Blake
who spoke on "UNT Library & Information
Sciences: Using Geospatial Information Skills
in the PEARL (Promoting and Enhancing the
Advancement of Rural Libraries) Project:'
