......... 1 The theme of this issue, "Current and Future Technology," addresses an
important topic for us all. It is interesting to look back at developments over the
......... 4 last several decades. When I first taught a course called "Bibliographic Searching"
in the late 1970s, we used a small terminal about the size of an old fashioned
portable typewriter that utilized a roll of paper for both input and responses. The
. 14 information retrieved was bibliographic only, not the information itself. Both the
students and I were in awe of this wonderful new technology. Students who come
. .. . . 17 to us now have used computers and developing technologies over the years and
.. 17 are fluent in today's digital society. LIS Chair Dr. Hawandeh terms them "digital
natives" in his excellent column on pg. 7 of this issue.
........ 20 Articles in the FEATURES section deal with different aspects of currency
during these rapidly changing times. An article, titled '"Aids in Staying Current,"' is
. 25 especially designed for alumni who feel the need to update or to learn about some
specific area. We hope that the information will be helpful to those attempting to
keep pace with technological advances.
I have not received any information about the activities of alumni who are
graduates of ATPI and CECS programs of the current Department of Learning
Technologies, which only a few years ago was a part of the College of Education
(see the information below). We are interested in reporting your positions, whether
new or not, and your honors and other accomplishments. We also would like you
to send a photograph to use with the information.
Call Number has been published since 1939 by the Department of Library
Services which later became the School of Library and Information Sciences. Since
the establishment of the College of Information, which includes the Departments
of Library and Information Sciences and Learning Technologies, Call Number has
been its official alumni magazine. Please let me hear from you at nichols2514@

A couple of years ago the ATPI and CECS programs ended their long tenure in the
College of Education and now comprise the Department of Learning Technologies in
the College of Information (COI). That means that all ATPI and CECS graduates are
alumni of the College of Information. We hope that you will enjoy receiving worthwhile
alumni information, such as this college magazine, titled Call Number, from your new
college. Please send us information about your job and other accomplishments along
with a photograph for inclusion in your alumni magazine.
