The new chapter of the UNT Beta Phi
Mu, the International Library and Information
Sciences Honor Society, was formally installed
at the 2011 ALA Annual Conference in New
Orleans. Selection to membership is based on
academic performance and professional promise.
(See pg. 8 for a list of the latest inductees) Drs.
Yunfei Du and Janet Hilbun have been appointed
as the new Beta Phi Mu advisors. Dr. Elizabeth
Figa served as advisor for the past ten years.
Michelle Malizia, associate director of the
National Network of Libraries of Medicine/
South Central Region (NN/LM SCR), and
Deborah Halsted, senior associate director of
operations, Texas Medical Center Library, and
adjunct faculty in the Houston Program, visited
the LIS Department on September 20, 2011.
The purpose of the meeting was for them to tell
LIS about NN/LM SCR and the programs that
they have and to learn how they can enhance their
support of educational programs and students.

On August 26, 2011, the California
cohort had what was termed by director Dr.
Phil Turner as an "amazing" and "awesome"
completion celebration. The program included
the performance of a song composed and sung
by Jared Brown, one of the graduates, with an
interpretive sign language performed by Evelyn
The Tarrant County College Library
Associate Degree in Technology Program at
the Trinity River Campus is off to a great start.
The advisory committee members were told
that twenty students enrolled for the first class,
Introduction to Library Technology, in fall 2011.
Students in the program can transfer to UNT for
either a BAAS in Learning Technologies or a BS
degree in Library & Information Sciences.

lunch at the UNT Health Science Center Library
in Fort Worth on October 26, 2011. The group

(MS'10), Laura Gutierrez (MS'09), Lisa Smith
(MS '92), Michele Whitehead (MS '11), and
