ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Writing this thesis has been a wonderful process. I not only learned from my
academic advisors, but also from the Chinese community with whom I studied.
I am indebted to my mentor and major advisor, Dr. Catherine Ragland. I am
inspired by her academic enthusiasm and her dedication as an ethnomusicologist.
Without her rigorous criticism, professional support, and patient help, I would have
never completed my thesis. I would like to especially acknowledge Dr. Steven
Friedson. His exceedingly profound knowledge and wisdom have shaped my
perspective on ethnomusicology and philosophy. I would like to express my gratitude
to Dr. Vivek Virani, whose intellectual guidance and special counsel on Asian culture
and the Asian American diaspora has strengthened my theoretical work.
I am also indebted to the members of the Houston Chinese Traditional Music
Group (HCTMG). In particular, I want to thank Zhang Xin, the conductor of the
HCTMG. I was moved by Zhang's extraordinary enthusiasm for Chinese music.
Wang Yuetang, Pan Hongling, Lu Weiping, and Peng Zhuoxi shared their stories,
struggles, and happy and sad experience as part of a third generation of Chinese
immigrants in the United States.
I have been fortunate to have a wonderful and supportive group of colleagues,
fellow graduate students, and friends. Holly Cassell, Dawn De Rycke, and Mingshuo
Liu warmheartedly helped me improve my English writing. Without their friendship,
the whole writing process would be very challenging and lonely.
Finally, my deepest appreciation and gratitude go to my husband, Ma Ge, and
my baby daughter, Sophie. My husband has made a huge sacrifice so I can pursue
my academic dream. His enduring love, understanding, and support made my dream
possible. And my daughter gives new meaning to all that I do.iii
