Electron Loading and High Voltage Sparking of Metals in Vacuum

Description: Statistical methods were employed to measure relative values of electron loading and spark-over voltage for a large number of unoutgassed electrode materials. Test voltages up to 110 KV were employed in vacuum of the order of 10-7 mm Hg. All metals showed a square root dependence between spark-over voltage and spacing.

Three Lectures On Controlled Thermonuclear Power Production

Description: This report was written from the notes used by Dr. York in delivering his three lectures on considerations pertinent to the problem of utilizing controlled thermonuclear reactions for the production of power. The first lecture discussed fundamental properties of the DD and DT reactions and the reacting substances. The second lecture described the stellarator, a proposed machine for the controlled production of power from the above reactions. The third lecture described the pinch effect and cons… more

Vibrational States Of The HD⁺ And HT⁺ Ions

Description: The vibrational eigenvalues belonging to the ground electronic state of the HD+ and HT+ ions have been calculated. These calculations have been done for the J = 0 rotational state and neglecting the dynamic corrections to the potential. For the HD+ ion we find twenty-two bound states, and for the HT+ ion twenty three bound states.

II. K+ Charge Exchange - Production Of Ko Mesone By Charge Exchange Of K+ In Propane

Description: In another paper there was reported an attempt to observe the charge-exchange process in a counter-triggered multiplate cloud chamber at the Bevatron but the interpretation was ambiguous. Shortly after the close of that experiment the 30-in. propane bubble chamber at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory was completed and able to be used for a combined engineering test and experiment. The existence of Reaction (1) has been confirmed in this experiment, and an approximate cross-section value for car… more

1. K+ Charge Exchange - Search For K+ Charge Exchange

Description: An experiment was designed utilizing a charge-exchange reaction to study the decay and interactions of the neutral K mesons produced. The experiment produced no events that could be interpreted as either the decay or interaction of neutral K mesons. The nature of the experiment and the possible explanations of this unexpected result are presented in this paper.

Modes of Acceleration of Ions in a 3-DEE Cyclotron.

Description: The analysis shows that a symmetrical three-dee cyclotron accelerating ions below relativistic velocities has the property that ions of different e/m rations can be accelerated without changing the frequency of the electrical power supplied to the dees or the value of the magnetic field. The energy gain per revolution of the ions which can be accelerated in the various modes are found, considering three identical dees of arbitrary angular widths. For these calculations it has been assumed tha… more

The Chelate Process: [Part] 5. Investigation in Horizontal Extractors

Description: The recovery of plutonium has been demonstrated in a laboratory countercurrent horizontal extractor using the TTA process. Using three extractive stages and two washing stages in each step, a recovery of 91 percent has been obtained in the chelation step and a recovery of 99.9+ percent in the de-chelation step. With five extractive stages, recoveries of 94-98 percent have been found for the chelation step.
