Recommended Guanidine Suppressor for the Next-Generation Caustic-Side Solvent Extraction Process

Description: The guanidine recommended for the Next-Generation Caustic-Side is N,N ,N -tris(3,7-dimethyloctyl)guanidine (TiDG). Systematic testing has shown that it is significantly more lipophilic than the previously recommended guanidine DCiTG, the active extractant in the commercial guanidine product LIX -79, while not otherwise changing the solvent performance. Previous testing indicated that the extent of partitioning of the DCiTG suppressor to the aqueous strip solution is significantly greater than eā€¦ more

Ten-picosecond streak camera for the laser fusion program at LLL

Description: From electro-optical systems design conference; New York, New York. USA (18 Sep 1973). The development and operation of 10-picosecond streak cameras in the LLL laser fusion program are described. In addition, modifications to two TRW Model 1-D high-speed streak cameras are discussed. The compact cameras are completely self-contained, weigh about 27 kg, and occupy about 1/6 m/sup 2/ of bench space. Power consumption is less than 10 W. (auth)

Geothermal Energy Program. Subpanel Report VIII Used in Preparing the AEC Chairman's Report to the President

Description: Only one resource type is presently being used to produce power in the U. S.--dry steam generating 400 MWe at The Geysers near Santa Rosa, California. Six other types --brines at high temperature and low salinity, high temperature and high salinity, low temperature and low salinity, and in geopressured reservoirs, plus dry hot rock at shallow depth and in deep, normal-gradient formations -- are potentially available for economic energy recovery. The program plan calls for a government budgetaryā€¦ more

Daughters of the King and Founders of a Nation: Les Filles du Roi in New France

Description: The late seventeenth century was a crucial era in establishing territorial claims on the North American continent. In order to strengthen France's hold on the Quebec colony, Louis XIV sent 770 women across the Atlantic at royal expense in order to populate New France. Since that time, these women known as the filles du roi, have often been reduced to a footnote in history books, or else mistakenly slandered as women of questionable morals. This work seeks to clearly identify the filles du roi tā€¦ more

A Study of Premenstrual Syndrome in Teachers and Reported Classroom Misbehavior

Description: Periodic fluctuations in women's emotions during the menstrual cycle have been a continuing topic of research and discussion. The current study was designed to determine if premenstrual syndrome conditions in female teachers have any effect on reported classroom misbehavior and infractions. Subjects were twenty-one faculty members presently employed in the capacity of teachers in a public middle school. By utilizing a teacher's daily behavioral checklist, along with student misconduct reports, ā€¦ more

Feeding of the 1 1/2- Isomers in Stable Ir and Au Isotopes

Description: Excited states were studied and absolute partial {gamma}-ray cross sections were measured using the ({eta}, {eta}'{gamma}) reaction in {sup 191}Ir, {sup 193}Ir and {sup 197}Au. A Compton-suppressed germanium-detector array (GEANIE) for {gamma}-ray spectroscopy and the broad-spectrum pulsed neutron source of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center's WNR facility were used for the measurement. The energy of the incident neutrons was determined using the time-of-flight technique. Absolute partial {gā€¦ more

Dynamics of H sub 2 elimination from unsaturated hydrocarbons

Description: State-of-the-art laser and molecular beam techniques are used to study the dynamics of H{sub 2} elimination from 1,4-cyclohexadiene and ethylene. Information on the transition state configurations and the dynamics of the dissociation processes for these reactions is reported. 152 refs., 54 figs., 12 tabs.

Antisatellites (Killer Satellites)

Description: This issue brief discusses "killer satellites," the unofficial moniker for antisatellite (ASAT) missiles possessed by the Soviet Union in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as U.S. efforts to develop ASAT systems and simultaneously limit their development and use.

Factors affecting home range of mallard pairs

Description: Certain habitat and social factors were investigated for their effect on home range size of mallard (Anas platyhynchos) pairs breeding in a forested region of north-central Minnesota during the spring of 1971--72. Data from 31 radio-marked hens and drakes were used, but primary emphasis was placed on 8 pairs (5 with both members of the pair marked). Pairs were radio-tracked on river marsh areas, river channels, and large sand lakes to provide comparative data for evaluating home range size diffā€¦ more

Crystallization of a member of the recFOR DNA repair pathway, RecO, with and without bound oligonucleotide

Description: RecFOR proteins are important for DNA repair by homologous recombination in bacteria. The RecO protein from Thermus thermophilus was cloned, purified and characterized for its binding to oligonucleotides. The protein was crystallized alone and in complex with a 14-mer oligonucleotide. Both crystal forms grow under different crystallization conditions in the same space group, P3121 or P3221, with almost identical unit cell parameters. Complete data sets were collected to 2.8 Angstrom and 2.5 Angā€¦ more

Internal Conversion Coefficients - How Good Are They Now?

Description: Internal conversion coefficients involving atomic electrons (ICC) and electron-positron pairs (IPC) are often required to determine transition multipolarities and total transition rates. A new internal conversion coefficient data base, BrIcc has been developed which integrates a number of tabulations on ICC and IPC, as well as {Omega}(E0) electronic factors. To decide which theoretical internal conversion coefficient table to use, the accurately determined experimental {alpha}{sub K}, {alpha}{sā€¦ more
