An Investigation of Aircraft Heaters 6: Heat Transfer Equations for the Single Pass Longitudinal Exchanger

Description: Report presenting an analysis of parallel flow and contraflow single pass heat exchangers, together with charts which allow the direct evaluation of the thermal performance of the units without recourse to trail-and-error techniques. The use of equations and charts is illustrated by several examples.

Tests of a Stress-Carrying Door in Compression

Description: Bulletin presenting the results of bending tests on a monocoque box with the door on the compression side. The results indicate that the effectiveness of a stress-carrying door depends on the intended function of the door.

Selection of Oil Coolers to Avoid Congealing

Description: Report presenting a study of oil coolers, especially in regards to three factors: the congealing tendency of the cooler, the power cost chargeable to the installation, and the performance characteristics of the oil cooler in operation at altitude.

Notes on Maximum Airplane Angular Velocities

Description: Bulletin presenting some information on obtaining the maximum angular velocities to which aircraft are subjected in flight. Some of the maneuvers explored include pitching, rolling, yawing, or combinations of the motions, such as spinning.

Altitude Rating of Electrical Apparatus

Description: "This paper studies the effect of altitude on the ratings of rotating electric machines and after determining the fundamental principles involved, discusses these in relation to the application of such machines in modern aircraft" (p. 1).

A method for studying the hunting oscillations of and airplane with a simple type of automatic control

Description: Report presenting a method for predicting the amplitude and frequency, under certain simplifying conditions, of the hunting oscillations of an automatically controlled aircraft with lag in the control system or in response of the aircraft to the controls. Formulas are given expressing the response to a variation of signal in terms of response to a unit signal.

The Flow of a Compressible Fluid Past a Curved Surface

Description: Report presenting an iteration method employed to obtain the flow of a compressible fluid past a curved surface. For small Mach numbers and thin shapes, the results obtained by the iteration process agree with those obtained by the Poggi method.

A Theoretical Investigation of the Lateral Oscillations of an Airplane With Free Rudder With Special Reference to the Effect of Friction

Description: Report presenting charts showing the variation in dynamic stability with the rudder hinge-moment characteristics. A stabilizing rudder floating tendency combined with a high degree of aerodynamic balance is shown to lead to oscillations of increasing amplitude.

Tire friction coefficients and their relation to ground-run distance in landing

Description: Report presenting a summary of published information on braking friction coefficients. Analysis indicates that the magnitude of the friction coefficient available will affect the technique required for obtaining the shortest ground run only under extreme conditions.

A study of the effect of adverse yawing moment on lateral maneuverability at a high lift coefficient

Description: Report presenting a theoretical study of the effects of aileron adverse yawing moment on lateral maneuverability at a high lift coefficient. The study included the effects of changes in effective dihedral angle, vertical-tail area, and tail length.

Effect of Humidity on Several Supercharger Parameters

Description: Report presenting testing to determine if the change of several specific variables with extreme change of humidity and test-bench temperature will have an appreciable effect on several parameters used to determine supercharger performance.
