Mode methods for strain-hardening structures

Description: An approximation method is being developed to predict the dynamic plastic response of rigid, strain-hardening structures. This method is analogous to the instantaneous mode techniques used to treat rigid, perfectly plastic structures in that a deflection shape involving a number of arbitrary functions of time is selected, based on static deformation profiles. Two stress fields are associated with the deflection shape: One satisfies the equations of motion with appropriate boundary and continuit… more

The Scalable Coherent Interface and related standards projects

Description: The Scalable Coherent Interface (SCI) project (IEEE P1596) found a way to avoid the limits that are inherent in bus technology. SCI provides bus-like services by transmitting packets on a collection of point-to-point unidirectional links. The SCI protocols support cache coherence in a distributed-shared-memory multiprocessor model, message passing, I/O, and local-area-network-like communication over fiber optic or wire links. VLSI circuits that operate parallel links at 1000 MByte/s and serial … more

Few-body binding energy correlations

Description: The effect of strongly linear few-nucleon binding energy correlations under variation of the potential has been found by the authors in the three-nucleon case. Their previous work is sketched as a basis for giving several extensions in the present note. Under realistic conditions there is a weak energy dependence for the kernels of the separable approximated Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas equations. The first-order correction E/sub T//sup 1/ is smaller for the Gauss potential than for the Yamaguchi; t… more

Open and hidden charm muoproduction. [209 GeV]

Description: New results are presented on open and hidden charm and bottom production by 209-GeV muons interacting in a magnetized steel calorimeter. The upper limit on the production of T states by muons is sigma(..mu..N ..-->.. ..mu..UPSILONX)B(UPSILON ..-->.. ..mu mu..) < 22 x 10/sup -39/ cm/sup 2/ (90% confidence level). The distributions of elastically produced psi's are consistent with s-channel helicity conservation (SCHC) and disagree with psi dominance. From analysis of dimuon final states the cros… more

Treatment of radioactive mixed wastes in commercial low-level wastes

Description: Management options for three generic categories of radioactive mixed waste in commercial low-level wastes have been identified and evaluated. These wastes were characterized as part of a BNL study in which a large number of generators were surveyed for information on potentially hazardous low-level wastes. The general management targets adopted for mixed wastes are immobilization, destruction, and reclamation. It is possible that these targets may not be practical for some wastes, and for these… more

MTX (Microwave Tokamak Experiment) facility and machine grounding plan

Description: A key issue in the design of fusion research experiments and their related facilities is the control of ground currents. Because of the large magnetic field, high voltages and high currents present in most of these installations, it is essential to avoid ground loops, and to control ground currents during both normal operations and fault conditions. This paper describes the grounding policy that was developed for MTX. The vault area was divided into zones, and each of the four walls was treated… more

A measurement of the p p total cross section at radical s = 1800 GeV

Description: The {bar p}p differential elastic scattering cross section was measured at {radical}{bar s} = 1800 GeV, using an improved accelerator luminosity determination and CDF small angle data in the range of 0.05 {le} t {le} 0.2(GeV/c){sup 2}. By extrapolating the differential cross sections to t=0 and using the optical theorem we obtain a total cross section of {sigma}{sub tot}({bar p}p) = 72.0 {plus minus} 3.6 mb. This result is preliminary in the sense that we expect to further reduce the systematic… more

Some fundamental aspects of the optical potential for the interaction of fast neutrons with cobalt

Description: Differential elastic- and inelastic-scattering cross sections, measured from approx.1.5 to 10.0 MeV, are interpreted in terms of spherical-optical-statistical (OM) and coupled-channels models. A successful description of the differential elastic scattering below 10 MeV and the total cross section to 20.0 MeV is achieved using the spherical OM with energy-dependent strengths and geometries. These energy dependencies are large below approx.7.0 MeV, but become smaller and similar to those reported… more
