Description: Transcription, translation and linguistic analysis of Mahida Murad reciting “Danlathas ke Baadsha” in the Hunza dialect. In this popular story a witch kills some princes and scares the king into marrying her. She took all of the King’s daughter-in-laws and stole their eyes, sealing them into a pit hidden away from the kingdom. The youngest raises her child, and he must save his mother and aunties. Transcription done in Burushaski with translations in English.

In this popular story Hamale Khatun is invited to the house of a paranormal Queen, and stitches clothing for all of her sons and daughters at their weddings. When she returns home, Hamale Khatun comes with warnings to remain moral by the Queen, and tries to make sure her children obey them.

Transcription: Description of a diram phitti recipe

Description: Transcription and free English translation of a recording of Ruqayya Bano sharing the recipe for “Diram Phitti”, or sweet bread cake, in the Nagar dialect. In this recipe, grain is germinated, then ground into flour and fermented. This flour is made into dough, and cooked on an iron pan in individual patties.
