Community Attitudes Toward Near-Death Experiences: An Australian Study

Description: Abstract: In an Australian survey of community attitudes toward near-death experiences (NDEs), 173 respondents were asked to read a hypothetical description of an NDE and to select from a range of explanations that might approximate their own. Fifty-seven percent of the respondents believed the NDE was evidence of life after death, while less than 2 percent believed the NDE was a sign of mental illness. Women, younger persons, and those who professed a belief in life after death were more lik… more

Different Kinds of Near-Death Experience: A Report on a Survey of Near-Death Experiences in Germany

Description: Article providing a short summary of a representative survey on near-death experiences (NDEs) in Germany, which is the first of its kind in Europe. The researchers tested several assumptions derived from previous research on NDEs, including the assumptions of a unified pattern of experience, the universality of the pattern, and the necessary link between NDEs and clinical death.

The Impact of Near-Death Experiences on Persons Who Have Not Had Them: A Report of a Preliminary Study and Two Replications

Description: Abstract: Three informal surveys of college students enrolled in a semester-long course on near-death experiences (NDEs) suggest that exposure to information about the NDE may bring about substantial changes in beliefs about NDEs, life after death, and God, as well as reduce fear of death and increase one's level of spirituality. These surveys and previous research point to the importance of conducting more systematic and large-scale studies of the impact of NDE materials on the general popula… more

Further Evidence For Veridical Perception During Near-Death Experiences

Description: Abstract: We briefly survey research designed to validate alleged out-of-body perceptions during near-death experiences. Most accounts of this kind that have surfaced since Michael Sabom's work are unsubstantiated self-reports or, as in claims of visual perception of blind persons, completely undocumented or fictional, but there have bee n some reports that were corroborated by witnesses. We briefly present and discuss three new cases of this kind.

A Comparison of Near-Death Experiences Occurring Before and After 1975: Results From an Internet Survey

Description: Abstract: The 1975 publication of Life After Life (Moody, 1975) led to wide public recognition of near death experiences (NDEs). Much of the early NDE research, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, studied NDEs occurring predominantly before 1975. If the content and aftereffects of NDEs remained constant before and after 1975, this early NDE research may be considered applicable to NDEs occurring more recently. This study used the methodology of an Internet-based questionnaire survey that has … more

The Near-Death Experience: A Study of Its Validity

Description: Abstract: An Italian translation of Greyson's (1983a) NDE Scale was administered to 125 individuals who had been resuscitated at a hospital in Italy. By NDE Scale criteria 37.5 percent of those who returned the questionnaire had authentic NDEs. These data suggest some limitations to Grayson's NDE Scale and recommendations for future research.

Brief Report: Psychotherapeutic Outcomes Reported by Therapists Trained in Induced After-Death Communication

Description: Abstract: Induced after-death communication (IADC) is a new psychotherapeutic procedure based on a variation of eye-movement desensitization and re-processing (EMDR). Psychologist Allan Botkin discovered it accidentally in 1995 while he was conducting therapy with combat veterans suffering from grief and post-traumatic stress disorder. During the course of the IADC treatment, Botkin's patients reported experiencing what they believed to be communications from a deceased person. The psychologic… more
