Statistical Study of Overstressing in Steel

Description: Note presenting a study of the effect of overstressing on the fatigue properties of SAE 4340 steel. The effect of microstructure on the susceptibility to reduction in fatigue life due to cycles of overstress was investigated. Results regarding the effect of microstructure on overstressing damage, influence of criterion of failure on fatigue life, and effect of overstressing on endurance-limit statistics are provided.

Separation of a Shock Wave Into Elastic and Plastic Waves, and Measurement of the Pressure of the Elastic Wave

Description: "Hydrodynamic theory predicts that if a shock wave in a metal is not too strong it will separate into two waves." This report discusses a modification of the contactor technique to determine the velocities of the two waves simultaneously for samples of steel and tungsten alloy.

Oxides in Pig Iron: Their Origin and Action in the Steel-Making Process

Description: From Introduction: "In summarizing the evidence in the literature it is apparent that there is general agreement among furnace men on the existence of so-called "bad-iron." It is also evident that the existence of dissolved or occluded gases is not an explanation. The presence of suspended oxides has been proved, and at least one plausible explanation for their formation has been given."

Experimental Production of Alloy Steels

Description: From Introduction and Reason For Undertaking the Work: "The Bureau of Mines has recently made up experimental heats of alloy steels for the Army and Navy. The Bureau of Mines has analyzed the Army steels for its own guidance only, for analysis of the steels for the arsenal was also scheduled to be made by the arsenal, though it was not, as it happened."
